Boys of Summer

“The sand may brush off. The tans may fade. But the memories will last forever.”

Flashback to my little beach boys.

Sand, sun and your best bud.

Even though this picture was taken 5 years ago, I remember this day perfectly. We were going to my cousin’s engagement party at my aunt and uncle’s house. They live right across the street from the beach but I thought with the party happening, there’d be no time for swimming.

I’m a super organized person. I’m a planner and a chronic overpacker because I’d rather have too much stuff than leave something behind that we might need. But on this day, I didn’t bring their bathing suits thinking we wouldn’t make it to the beach. So when the other kids at the party started putting on their suits to walk the 3 minutes to the water, I felt that sinking feeling as if I’d let my kids down. I know…it’s just bathing suits and it’s one day. But I still felt the guilt creeping in. This was not my first rodeo and I should’ve planned better “just in case.”

My husband knows me better than anyone and he could tell how I was feeling. He rounded up the boys and said “let’s go find you guys some new trunks!” I was grateful for his efforts but doubtful he’d find anything as my aunt and uncle’s place is in the middle of nowhere. So I was surprised when they came back 1/2 hour later with trunks that were just a little on the snug side because that’s all the little roadside store had, smiles on their faces and ready to hit the beach.

And our boys lived one of their best days of that summer in those new randomly purchased trunks. They played in the sand with their cousins. They collected shells and rocks. They tried tubing for the first time. And they fell asleep in the car on the way home, a sure sign of a day well spent in the sun and sand.

Even though it’s been 5 years, I’m grateful for this simple photo that brings back such great memories of my sweet boys of summer (my husband included ❤️)
